The Responsive Teaching Programme

An ambitious programme, designed for teachers, curriculum leaders, and assessment leaders, this CPD examines the principles and evidence behind responsive teaching. 

Underpinning effective teaching and learning is the need for teachers to be responsive. By identifying what our pupils have understood we can adapt our teaching accordingly. In turn, we will improve our teaching and our pupils’ learning. The aim of responsive teaching is to better understand and support all our pupils. Through utilising findings from cognitive science and formative assessment, this programme examines the principles of feedback, identifies effective ways to check what all pupils have understood, and outlines how classroom teachers can provide support and challenge in the classroom, sustainably. 

We will consider questions such as: 

• How do people learn? 
• What is cognitive load theory? 
• What is assessment for learning? 
• Why do teachers need to be responsive? 
• How do we check for understanding? 
• How can we improve our own practice? 
• How can we lead and improve the practice of others? 

This course has been designed to be completed over three 3-hour online virtual ‘live’ sessions. The content is delivered through blended learning, including facilitated online sessions, as well as self-guided gap tasks for you to complete in between session. You will be encouraged to put what you learn into practice, and you will be matched up with a course buddy in order to reflect on your practice and network with others. 

Our expectation is that participants will attend all sessions and will commit to completing the gap tasks between sessions. It is advised that headteachers only send participants onto the course if they agree to the commitments highlighted above.
