Geography Year 4

Our Year 4 geography curriculum teaches pupils carefully sequenced knowledge of British geography, European geography and world geography so children are learning more and remembering more over time. Pupils will build on their knowledge from Key Stage One and Year Three, using the vocabulary, skills and understanding to dive deeper into the discipline of geography. They will study geographical knowledge and concepts such as climate, landscapes, settlements, food, farming, and physical and human geographical features. The Year 4 geography curriculum will continue to strengthen the foundational knowledge children have of the discipline of geography.

Throughout the PKC, pupils gain a strong foundation of knowledge about the world around them. They locate places, learn about those locations and how they relate to surrounding areas. Our curriculum teaches pupils carefully sequenced knowledge of British geography with units that dive into the countries and regions of the UK including Northern Ireland and London and the South East. Children will continue to build their knowledge of European geography when studying Mediterranean Europe and Eastern Europe, building knowledge of trade, climate, landscapes, settlements, and comparing and contrasting regions of Europe. Children’s world knowledge will continue to develop as they build on what they learned in Year 3 about Asia and focus now upon Japan.

Our geography curriculum introduces pupils to substantive concepts including:

• Spatial sense
• Mediterranean Europe
• Eastern Europe
• UK geography: Northern Ireland
• UK geography: London and the South East
• Asia: Japan

We equip our partner schools with the necessary resources to effectively teach the PKC geography Year 4 curriculum to their pupils. Resources include lesson plans, curriculum maps, subject overviews, and subject and unit rationales.

Alongside the above resources, we provide every PKC Geography teacher with:

• Access to CPD training and resources
• Key vocabulary database and people databases

To gain a better understanding of the geography curriculum, we encourage all geography subject leaders to attend our “Dive into geography” CPD series. These sessions include six pre-recorded videos followed by a live session with our curriculum team. By attending this session you will be able to apply our geography curriculum with confidence within your schools.
