History Year 3

Our Year 3 history curriculum provides a platform to enrich children’s awareness of the past and develop their historical consciousness. Our curriculum builds on the knowledge previously learned, further developing their chronological understanding, including the history of Britain starting from the earliest times: The Stone Age. They will study the power struggle between the monarchy, the Church and the people during the Middle Ages, and develop pupil’s disciplinary knowledge by looking at how contrasting interpretations of the past have been constructed.

Through the PKC, pupils are instilled with the knowledge and skills to be able to understand and think critically about the historical periods they study. The Year 3 curriculum builds on the substantive concepts of monarchy and democracy, and introduces the concepts of civilization and migration. Within each unit, teachers are supported to make meaningful local connections, where appropriate.

The PKC History Year 3 Curriculum covers:

• The Stone Age to the Iron Age
• Ancient Egypt
• The Anglo Saxons, Scots and Vikings
• Law and Power (1154 – 1272
• The Wars of the Roses

We equip our partner schools with the necessary resources to effectively teach the PKC History Year 3 curriculum to their pupils. Resources include curriculum maps, lesson plans and detailed unit rationales.

Alongside the above resources, we provide every PKC history teacher with:

• History subject knowledge resources
• Knowledge organisers for each unit
• Assessment ideas including multiple-choice quizzes
• Access to CPD training and resources
• Key vocabulary and key people databases

To gain a better understanding of our history curriculum, we encourage all history subject leaders to attend our “Dive into History” CPD series. These sessions include six pre-recorded videos followed by a live session with our curriculum team. By attending this session you will be able to apply our history curriculum with confidence within your schools.
