Understanding the Primary Art Curriculum: Effective Curriculum Design
This online session will explore the potential of curriculum design to transform our children’s experiences of art enabling them to develop knowledge, skills and understanding over time. We will consider how carefully chosen content supports children’s creativity, providing them with a rich and varied ‘toolbox’ of techniques with which to express themselves. We will reflect upon curriculum content choices, sequencing and how to make meaningful links to the wider curriculum.
Children’s artistic knowledge and skills play a vital role in both understanding works of art and creating their own. Throughout their primary years, the primary art curriculum must deliver carefully chosen, well sequenced content to support the development of skills and to develop foundational understanding for future learning. This session will offer insight into primary art curriculum design, explanations of curriculum decisions and practical advice for teachers and school leaders.
We will consider questions such as:
- How do we develop a clear intent for our art curriculum?
- How do we make choices about which artists to study?
- How do we create an art curriculum that reflects both equality and diversity?
- How does the design of the art curriculum ensure progression?
- How can we ensure our art curriculum builds on and contributes to knowledge in other subject areas?
- How can our art curriculum equip children with skills of expression and nurture creativity?
