This online course will develop participant’s understanding of the primary Design Technology curriculum. We will explore how the PKC DT Curriculum is structured, sequenced and planned and will consider how we can use PKC to support our own school curriculum. We will think about how children develop knowledge, skills and understanding over time as they work through the DT curriculum, learning more and remembering more over time. We will reflect upon how we inspire students to think about the important and integral role which design, and the creation of designed products, play in our society.
We will explore the three foundational areas of our primary design technology curriculum; cook, build and sew. During the session we will unpick three different ‘aspects’ of design that are interwoven into the three areas of study: the environment and sustainability, enterprise and innovation and the process of design. We will learn how these aspects of design technology acknowledge enduring and contemporary concerns of modern design.
We will consider questions such as:
- How do we develop a clear intent for our DT curriculum?
- How do we make choices about the practical elements that children will study?
- How can we organise curriculum content to ensure it is manageable, practical and builds on prior learning?
- How can we ensure our DT curriculum builds on and contributes to knowledge in other subject areas, such as science?
- How can we incorporate children’s personal responses into our DT curriculum design?
- How can we support other teachers to deliver high quality DT lessons?
- How can we assess pupil progress in DT?
- How do we monitor the curriculum and assess impact?
This course is for curriculum leaders, DT subject leaders and teachers and will reflect upon the role that DT plays in the new Ofsted inspection framework.
