Developing Writing in Geography (ON DEMAND)

In 2021, the EEF published a report on the importance improving literacy across the curriculum. The report highlights the importance of supporting pupils to understand the disciplinary literacy associated with differing academic subjects. 

In this workshop, we will unpick the nuances with what it means to write a geographer. This session will highlight both the disciplinary knowledge, and the subject-specific disciplinary literacy associated with geography. Through enhancing our pupils’ understanding of disciplinary literacy, we can support them in reading, writing and effectively communicating through the academic language associated with the subject discipline of geography. 

This session will go on to provide practical ideas on how we can help support, structure and scaffold our pupils’ writing in geography. 

We will explore questions such as:  

• What does high quality writing in primary geography look like?  
• How does writing in geography differ from other disciplines?  
• How can I set my class up for success in extended writing? 
• What grammar tools are useful for writing in geography? 
• How can we develop children’s voices in their written work in geography?
