SWALE: Developing Writing in History
In 2021, the EEF published a report on the importance improving literacy across the curriculum. The report highlights the importance of supporting pupils to understand the disciplinary literacy associated with differing academic subjects.
In this workshop, we will unpick the nuances with what it means to write like a historian. This session will highlight both the disciplinary knowledge, and the subject-specific disciplinary literacy associated with history. Through enhancing our pupils’ understanding of disciplinary literacy, we can support them in reading, writing and effectively communicating through the academic language associated with the subject discipline of history.
We will provide strategies we can use to support children with writing historical accounts, providing case studies showcasing teaching sequences and outcomes from primary schools we work with.
