Incorporating the Local Element into the Geography Curriculum

Incorporating local geography into the curriculum stimulates children’s curiosity in their surroundings and helps them to develop a sense of identity and belonging. Local geography helps children to understand the physical and human processes which shape places and how people interact with the environment around them.

This day will support you with:

  • Understanding why local geography is important and how it can support children with developing their substantive and disciplinary knowledge.
  • Planning for local fieldwork that is embedded in units of work that support understanding of how geographers work
  • Networking with colleagues in partner schools to share ideas and expertise.
  • Developing well-planned local studies and that can be taught in your school.
  • Planning for enrichment opportunities available on your doorstep.
