Applying Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction in History

Developed by educational researcher Barak Rosenshine, his research highlights ten principles which he perceived as being key to effective teaching and learning. These 10 principles provide a much-needed bridge between scientific research and classroom practices. They equip teachers with a research-informed toolkit to enhance their instructional practices, develop effective habits, and improve pupil outcomes. 

In this session, we will examine what these principles look like in action within a primary setting. Through the lens of primary history, we will look at the value of these principles in harnessing the power of questioning, enhancing the clarity of historical explanations through presenting new information in small, manageable chunks, starting lessons with a review of prior knowledge, and analysing what scaffolds or models are most pertinent to primary history teaching, and much more.
