Science Year 6

Our Year 6 science curriculum aims to build upon all of the knowledge children have gained from their primary science education. This enables children to remember key information, to think deeply about it and to add to their developing schema over time. We believe that our curriculum empowers children and helps them to develop a love for science that will prepare them well for their secondary education.

The PKC will deepen children’s understanding of scientific enquiry through asking questions, observing, noticing patterns, describing relationships and interactions, and using evidence to draw conclusions. They will encounter scientists as they journey through the curriculum, learning how their work contributed to the discipline of science and how our scientific understanding has changed over time.

Throughout the PKC, pupils are equipped with the knowledge and understanding that enables them to learn more about the fascinating subject of science. Through the carefully specified and sequenced curriculum, children’s knowledge and conceptual understanding is developed throughout Year 6 and will be built upon as they move through to the Key Stage 3 curriculum in secondary school.

Our science curriculum introduces pupils to substantive and disciplinary knowledge through the following units:

• The Human Body
• Classification of Living Things
• Electricity
• Light
• Reproduction
• Evolution

We equip our partner schools with the necessary resources to effectively teach the PKC science Year 6 curriculum to their pupils. Resources include lesson plans, curriculum maps, subject overviews, and subject and unit rationales.

Alongside the above resources, we provide every PKC science teacher with:

• Science subject knowledge for teachers
• Knowledge organisers for every unit
• Assessment and multiple choice quizzes
• Access to CPD training and resources
• Key vocabulary and key people databases

To gain a better understanding of our science curriculum, we encourage all science subject leaders to attend our “Dive into Science” CPD series. These sessions include six pre-recorded videos followed by a live session with our curriculum team. By attending this session you will be able to apply our science curriculum with confidence within your schools.
